The Mascot Cafe

The Mascot = relaxed, welcoming, rustic cafe in Parkdale. This cafe is close to my place, and I come here often to catch up on reading and work. There is always light music playing, friendly workers, and no matching furniture which makes the space feel eclectic
I normally get the jasmine tea...
...and a sweet. On my last visit I tried chocolate chip cookie, with salted caramel. YUM!
If you're in the hood, check this place out!

Crooked Star

Ossington Village is booming with a variety of fabulous restaurants and bars. Walking through this street on a warm evening  is sure to be filled with open patios, lots of people out and about and a good energy all around. Crooked Star is a bar/resto that is on the Ossington strip.
The food menu is fairly small and has your typical bar eats. The nacho's we tried were just O.K. Nothing too spectacular. The red wine and beer were enjoyable. The verdict for Crooked Star: Come for drinks/ patio and pass on the food. Go to one of the other many places on this street with good food instead.

Piola

Piola is an Italian restaurant located at Queen and Gladstone. My sister and I were walking by the other day, and noticed their lunch special: 3 course meal for 15 bucks! We thought it was a steal so we went on in and dined. Here's what we had:
Bread basket with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
Caprese salad
Caesar Salad
Prosciutto plate with cheese and olives. This was not part of the 3 course meal deal. We just saw someone eating it, and thought it looked delish so we ordered our own. It was enjoyable.
 Margherita Pizza
 Diavolo Pizza
Lemon Gelato

I thought my meal at Piola was very enjoyable. Prices are reasonable and quality of the food is high. I will most likely be back to try other menu options. How can you beat a tasty 3 course meal for 15 bucks? Check it out!

Homemade Creme Brûlée

Attention all Creme Brûlée lovers: TRY THIS AT HOME! :)
On a recent visit to my home town, my mom and I decided to make Creme Brûlée. I am surprised with how delicious it turned out and how easy it was to execute. Here's how we made it:
Ingredients:
1 cup of white granulated sugar
6 egg yolks
4 cups whipping cream
1 tsp vanilla
Handful of raspberries
Add egg yolks, and 1/2 cup of the sugar to a bowl. Whisk together.
Add the cream and vanilla to a pot and bring to a boil. Once it comes to a boil, cover and take off heat. Let this sit for about 15 minutes.
Slowly add the cream to the egg yolks and sugar. Do this a little at a time so you don't scramble the eggs.
Pour the mixture into 6 ramekins (2 aren't pictured) and place the ramekins in a baking dish. Add the raspberries to each one. Fill the baking dish with warm water about half way up the height of the ramekins.
Bake for 40-45 minutes. Remove from oven, and let sit in the fridge for 3 hours. After they have rested add the remainder of the sugar over each creme brûlée so there is an even coat of sugar on the top layer. Put back into the oven on top rack, and broil till the sugar is caramelized and hardened a little.
VOILA! Not trying to toot my own horn here, but this is one of the best creme brûlée's I've ever had. So easy, and SO good!
